The Golden Rule for Any Window

No matter how unusual your window shape — arched, bay, dormer, or tiny — curtains always hang from a straight horizontal rod. So you never measure the window shape itself. You measure where the rod goes (width) and where you want the curtain to end (length). That's it.

Common Cottage & Airbnb Window Types

🏛️

Arched / Round-Top Windows

Mount the rod 4–6" above the highest point of the arch. The curtain hangs straight down, covering the arch. Measure width across the rod, length from rod to floor.

Rod above the arch = no tricky shapes
🪟

Bay Windows

Treat each section as a separate window, or install one long rod across the entire bay. For each panel: measure that section's width plus a few inches per side for overlap.

🏠

Dormer / Slanted-Ceiling Windows

Measure the window width and add 3–4" each side. For length: from just above the window frame to the sill (or a few inches below). A shorter panel works best in tight dormers.

Sill-length panels suit tight spaces

Small or Non-Standard Windows

Extend the rod wider than the window to make the room feel larger and let in maximum light when open. The curtain is simply sized to the rod width, not the window itself.

Wider rod = bigger-looking window

French Doors with Windows

Mount a rod at the very top of the door frame. Use a floor-length panel on each side that clears the door opening. Standard sizing applies — just taller.

Skylights

Skylights are tricky for hanging fabric — we recommend a roller blind or cellular shade instead. For adjacent wall windows near the skylight, standard measuring applies.

How to Measure — Step by Step

1

Decide where the rod goes

For a standard look: 4–6" above the window frame. For a dramatic, ceiling-height look: mount the rod 2–4" below the ceiling. Higher rod = room feels taller.

2

Measure the rod width (= curtain width)

Measure the total length of your rod or where you want coverage. A common rule: extend 4–6" beyond the window frame on each side so the window looks wider and light is not blocked when curtains are open.

3

Measure the drop (= curtain length)

From the rod to your desired endpoint. Options: Floor-length — rod to 1/2" above the floor. Sill-length — rod to 1" below the window sill. Apron-length — rod to 4" below the sill.

4

Calculate your order size

Each curtain panel width = total rod width ÷ 2 (for a 2-panel set). We sew each panel with 1.5× to 2× fabric fullness built in, so order the finished width — we handle the fullness.

Frequently Asked Questions

My window is arched — can I still get curtains that cover it fully?

Yes. Simply mount the rod above the arch and order a panel long enough to reach the floor. The curtain will cover the arch completely when closed, and stack neatly to the side when open.

Do you make curtains for very small windows (cottage / bunkhouse windows)?

Absolutely. We make panels as narrow as 18" wide and as short as 24" long. Just enter your dimensions at checkout. There is no extra charge for small sizes.

What header style is best for a cottage or Airbnb?

Grommet top is the most popular for casual cottages — slides smoothly, looks modern, easy for guests to open and close. Rod pocket is great for a classic, cozy look. Pinch pleat works well for more formal Airbnbs.

Should I order blackout curtains for my Airbnb bedrooms?

Yes — it is one of the top things guests mention in reviews. Our fully blackout velvet curtains block 100% of light, which is especially useful in cottage country where summer nights stay bright late.

What if my measurements are a half-inch off?

A small difference is fine. We build a standard hem allowance into every panel. If you are between sizes, round up — it is easier to hem a curtain shorter than to add length.

I have 8 windows in my Airbnb — can I order in bulk?

Yes! Each panel can have different dimensions, just add them individually to your cart. Contact us if you need a custom quote for large orders of 10+ panels.
